Before we can discuss Christian leadership in the marketplace, we must define what it really is and the perspective the believer must have. Every Christian is called to lead and fulfill the Great Commission found in Matthew 28:19-20 “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you, and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” To fulfill the Great Commission, a new breed of leader must emerge in the marketplace. One that understands it is not about position or power, but it is about bringing influence through relationship. The influence that must shine is the Christlike character of the individual which is brought about through obedience to the Word of God.
Second Timothy 3:16-17 states “all scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.” Each of us should have a desire to be equipped and ready to perform the work God has assigned to us.
The first place we must look for instruction is the Pattern Son Jesus who said in Matthew 20:28 “just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” The leadership assignment that promotes the Kingdom of God is the servant leader and it requires an attitude of humility and a willingness to sacrifice oneself for the good of others. So, whether you own a business, sit on the board of directors, are a superintendent, a foreman, or an employee, your Kingdom assignment is always to bring healing to others, help build their lives, and serve them in whatever capacity you can. This will open the door to discipling.
